Implementation of the Obesity Surgery Unit and Metabolic Diseases in HLA Vistahermosa

Obesity is a chronic disease of multifactorial origin that is characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat. Overweight and obesity are considered one of the main health problems of today's society. In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that there were a total of 1.9 billion adults with overweight or obesity worldwide, among which 650 million suffered obesity, which means that 39% of The world adult population suffered overweight and 13 % obesity.

In the nutritional study of the Spanish population (ENPE), it was estimated that more than half of Spaniards between 25 and 64 years suffer overweight or obesity. This same study indicated that 39 % of this population suffers overweight and 22 % obesity.

The treatment of obesity should be focused in an integral and multidisciplinary way, using a wide range of therapeutic strategies (diet, physical activity, modification of life styles, pharmacological treatment, bariatric surgery, etc.) and without limiting yourself to a single approach .

The conservative treatment of "clinically serious" obesity includes hypocaloric diets, behavioral modifications, exercise and some pharmacological agents. In addition, comorbidity linked to obesity, particularly hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia, has a specific treatment, although its effectiveness may be different from that shown in people with Normopeso. However, although the results of these treatments are effective in the short term under close supervision, a maintained weight loss and a control of comorbidity are rarely achieved beyond a year.

Surgery is justified by the fact that no other treatment has been effective in the long term in the face of a disease, morbid obesity, which is considered chronic and intractable. The success of surgery is based on weight loss, the improvement in comorbidities and psychosocial effects.

Taking into account these foundations, the members of the General and Digestive System of HLA Vistahermosa team have initiated the process of training and accreditation in obesity surgery and metabolic diseases developed by the Spanish Society of Obesity Surgery (dry) for To be able to offer our patients a definitive solution to their problems of overweight, obesity and metabolic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension or dyslipipemia.

With this objective, we have initiated some surgical collaboration meetings with our classmates of the Almería Obesity team that develop their professional activity at the HLA Mediterranean hospital and from where they have invited us to collaborate with them and to be able to know closely the details of the surgical techniques that they do there, as well as the management and organization of a unit with extensive experience in this pathology. We cannot end without thanking doctors Ferrer Ayza, Ferrer Márquez and Rubio Gil, as well as rest of the members of the Almería Obesity team, their courtesy and hot receipt. It is a real pleasure to work with them.
