Single incision surgery. One more step in minimally invasive surgery.

The Laparoscopy, surgical technique that allows us to intervene making several incisions in the abdomen, a very important advance regarding conventional surgery, minimizing the unpleasant effects of surgery. New techniques now allow this type of operations to be carried out with a single incision in the navel. This transumbilical surgery technique is known as SILS).

The technique consists in the introduction of the instruments through an incision of approximately two centimeters that is practiced in the finest area of the abdominal wall, above the navel. It uses a mobile piece that adjusts in the incision, allowing the surgeon to introduce the instruments and the laparoscopic chamber, which will allow it to see with total precision what happens inside the patient and will facilitate access to the area to intervene.

With transumbilical surgery, a very high degree of satisfaction is obtained, in this case, the surgical incision is disguised having few aesthetic consequences for the patient, but the benefits are not only in the aesthetic advantages: The SILS is less pain, less invasion, less damage to the defenses and the immune system.

The General and Digestive Surgery Service of the Vistahermosa Clinic performs about 400 interventions per year laparoscopic. In selected cases, the SILS is used as the first option, resulting in an interesting technique for some pathologies, such as cholelithiasis, inguinal hernia and acute acute appendicitis, being very useful, being very useful in sometimes complementing this technique with the use of mini -nstruration to be able to perform more complex interventions . Always selecting patients individually.

The intervention is transumbilical and only provides advantages in the patient's safety and recovery, also significantly reduces pain. Today, few techniques allow such good results. The technology and entry developed by the laboratories are those that allow this type of advance, and, in the case of the General and Digestive Surgery Service of the Vistahermosa Clinic, the habit of their surgeons in advanced laparoscopic techniques.

We speak, therefore, of a technique of recent appearance and that develops in a few hospitals, it is important, to be prudent at the time of the indications, because the SILS technique, as in any novel technique, is essential that it be practiced by a Team of trained, specialized and experienced surgeons.
